From 1969-1971, Hee Haw was an American television variety show featuring country music and humor. It had sketches and music.
One of the songs that became a favorite on the show was “Gloom, Despair and Agony on Me”.* It was a humorous (to us then) sketch where the singers would begin with the chorus then others would add verses of comedic bad luck stories.
We laughed at the antics of the singers, the story verses and the catchy tune. The mindless tune was fun to sing.
Pastor Keith Moore made a really good point in church yesterday. He was talking about the power of our words and how the enemy comes to steal our words.
Satan WANTS us to make bad confessions. Why? John 10:10 and Proverbs 18:20-21
Bad (wrong) words authorize the enemy to bring those words to pass in our life.
God’s words, positive, life words, authorize the angels to bring those positive, life-affirming words into our life.
Pastor Keith made a statement about music and the lyrics. No matter what generation, there were songs about loss, heartache, crazy, bad luck, despair, and more. I could give a list of songs from the 50’s-60’s that most of you would recognize.
His point was that the music was catchy in some way and we would sing along every time we heard it. Even today, if we are listening to popular songs (oldies) from the past, it only takes a note or two and we’ll start singing it because we automatically remember the song.
We sang it so much it’s in us. If someone just asked us the lyrics to a song, we most likely wouldn’t be able to tell them. But! Let the actual song play and we open our mouths and sing every line without thinking.
We had no idea we were feeding our Spirits, over and over and over. That’s the power of repetition. Repeating something until it’s “in you” – good or bad.
If there is more of that “bad” in us than the Word of God, then what’s in us in abundance will automatically start coming out our mouth when pressure hits. That’s why the enemy comes for our words. He wants us speaking his words.
Start evaluating what you are hearing, watching and reading, then mindlessly speaking. It could be music, books, television shows, movies. Begin to realize anything you hear over and over is getting down in you.
Who are you authorizing to work with those words? Those words are either going to bring The Blessing or The Curse, life or death.

*Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Yes! Only one choice. We can choose “life/blessing” or “death/curse”. Thanks for the reminder (as always!) Hugs . . .
So true, Nan. We can remember songs and catchy phrases when we can’t remember what we got up to do. Must guard our hearts and minds to “be careful little ears what you hear”. Good word, Friend!
