Most of us grew up in Sunday School and remember learning about Daniel in the lions’ den and the three Hebrew men who were thrown into the fiery furnace. Both stories were about choosing whether to worship other gods or our God.
If you don’t know the stories (Daniel 3 and Daniel 6 ), both were about ungodly people who became jealous of godly people put into positions of authority and power. Both Kings were tricked or just decided that others should worship them instead of their own God.
Long before Daniel was thrown into the den of lions, he’d been promoted to a high position in government, and had asked the then King to also appoint three of his fellow trustworthy friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, to be in charge of all the affairs of the province of Babylon.
This King, Nebuchadnezzar, made a gold statue ninety feet tall and nine feet wide and decreed that everyone should bow down and worship it. It was also decreed that those who refused to obey must be thrown into a blazing furnace. People were jealous and told the King “those three Jews you put in charge won’t bow down and worship your statue.”
The three men made one decree – Throw us in, our God will save us. Don’t throw us in, we still won’t worship your gods and statue.
So of course, the King flew into a rage, had the furnace heated even hotter, and demanded the men be thrown into the fiery furnace. It was so hot, the heat of the fire killed those men who took the three to the furnace.
Here is what is important: Nebuchadnezzar yelled out, “Are you still alive?” and the men walked out of the furnace. “Then the (important people) crowded around them and saw that the fire had not touched them. Not a hair on their heads was singed, and their clothing was not scorched. They didn’t even smell of smoke! (Daniel 3:27, NLT)
The Literal Translation states – “And they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power“. Got that? The fire had NO POWER. No singed spots, no very sunburned skin, no burned off clothes, no missing hair, not even the smell of smoke. It was like they were never even in the furnace. Psalm 91 – they were in the secret place of the Most High, God.
If our God can protect these three men from the fire and the effects of fire, what can He protect us from? Every. Single. Thing. Anything.
We are living in times where people threaten to kill, steal and destroy everything good & righteous (HEY, doesn’t that sound familiar? It should; it’s the devil’s job – John 10:10a “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy”).
NO matter what is going on out there, we are protected under God’s wings (if we choose to believe that). Nothing can harm us (if we choose to believe that). The wicked one touches us not (if we choose to believe that).
And also let us remember the second half of John 10:10 – “My (Jesus’) purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life”.
You Have His Word On It – stay protected!
