The Holy Spirit, Leland and Snowmen

John 14:26 – (LITV)  but the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and shall remind you of all things that I said to you.

John 14:26 – (AMPC)  But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.

♥♥

Very few Christians take advantage of the Holy Spirit – the Comforter that Jesus said He would sent to us after He went away. He said that the Holy Spirit would live with us forever yet most ignore Him or don’t even know He exists.  (John 14:16)

Today I want to focus on the fact the Holy Spirit is our Helper and He wants to teach us all things (that we need to know).

When Leland was still here instead of at his new address, I had a habit. When we were in bed sleeping, at some point during the night I would automatically reach out and touch him. Arm, back, or patting his rear end, I would touch him. It gave me peace.

I still reach out to touch him. The long time habit hasn’t stopped since he died. I am half asleep and it will wake me up when I realize he isn’t there. It hurt. A lot.

A few days ago, the Holy Spirit became my Helper in an unusual way. He told me to put something on the bed. I don’t mean I heard an audible voice. This was just a thought that popped into my head while I was minding my business elsewhere.

Yes, that is a big fat snowman sitting where Leland used to sleep. There are two purposes to why the Holy Spirit prompted me to put him on my bed.

One is because now, when I reach out to touch Leland, my hand finds a fuzzy leg, arm, body – and I chuckle and go back to sleep. It makes me smile and it is peaceful. No, Leland isn’t there but… he shouldn’t have left me all alone.

Why? Because the second reason – I used to have a massive snowman collection. He constantly threatened the poor innocent snowmen. (Don’t worry. It was just a tradition. No snowmen were harmed [smile]. I dig out the snowmen for Christmas time and he’d mumble threats.)

He was going to blow torch them. He was going to drag them out to a desert and bury them in the hot sand. Chase them down with the lawnmower, weedwhack them – he was always coming up with inventive ways to get rid of the snowmen.

So the Holy Spirit has a sense of humor. It is poetic justice: Leland left me – so I put a snowman in his place. The snowman works because while it can’t replace Leland, it makes me smile when I touch it in the night. Peace.

The Holy Spirit is here to comfort us. He obviously cares about the tiniest of details in our life. He cares if we are hurting (and have a warped sense of humor).

He loves me enough to give me a solution to the hurt of Leland not being here. Most people may think, “Oh this is not holy!” but you know what? I don’t hurt like I did. I sleep better because that snowman solution is FUNNY and I smile, half asleep, because of that.

Yes, the Holy Spirit has given me help in far more serious areas. I just love knowing that He cares when I hurt.

And if He cares about me enough to come up with THE perfect solution like that, imagine what He will do for you – if you only ask Him!

  1. Oh how I love the solution… a funny reminder of all the jousting between you two. Leland is probably getting a good chuckle out of this, too.

Our God has great sense of humor and delights in our joy and promises to perfect everything that concerns us. AND… I love your warped sense of humor.

  2. I love your “warped sense of humor!” Isn’t it amazing that He takes care of the smallest, seemingly most insignificant details of our lives?!?! He’s SO GOOD! Hope you have a God-blessed day! Love and hugs . . . .

  3. This is an awesome piece (although with a little sense of humour). Good to learn more about our comforter, the Holy Spirit.

Thanks for sharing. God bless you!
