Learning to Hear God’s Voice Clearly

Recently someone mentioned that they didn’t really know how know hear God’s voice. I’m sure we have all had that question. I know I used to.

One of the best illustrations I’ve heard was this one. Your telephone rings. You answered it and say, “Hello?” You hear a voice saying, “Hi, it’s me.”  Now, it is a familiar voice, like a family member. Let’s say it’s your mom. You know it’s your mom without question – why? Because you KNOW you’re mom’s voice.

You spent your whole life with your mom (or a close family member or friend). You have no problem recognizing her voice simply because you have spent time with her. There is no doubt in your mind it’s her because you have heard her voice before, many times.

Same thing with God (and the Holy Spirit). You know Him by spending time with Him. The more time you spend with Him, the easier it will be to discern His voice from your own. It’s kind like a thought in your head, except n0t one you’d ever have on purpose (simplistic version).

And – a tidbit – you know the enemy’s voice because he will lie to you, tell you something that will fulfill his calling – stealing, killing and destroying. The more time you spend with God (and know His Word so you recognize lies), the easier it is to tell it’s the enemy’s voice, too.

I’m sure I’ve told this story before but it bears repeating. I was driving to church one evening. I was praying and asking God to help me learn to hear His voice better, more clearly. On the way home from church, it was dark. I lived in the boonies so I was on hilly back roads, no light and traffic. I began driving up a slight hill.

Suddenly I heard God’s voice, “SLOW DOWN!”  I glanced at my speedometer and I said, “But, I’m doing the speed limit, Lord!” (about 55 mph). I instantly heard, “I THOUGHT you said you wanted to learn to hear My voice more clearly?”

I immediately took my foot off the gas pedal, tapped on the brakes, then topped the hill. There at the bottom of the hill, congregating on MY side of the road, were about 25 deer. Had I been doing 55. well, I don’t even want to think what would have happened to me or my car. They didn’t even scatter that quickly, even as I slowly moved toward them.

It pays to hear God’s voice clearly – and to OBEY it! Ask Him to teach you today!
