One time when Leland and I were teaching in a small church, God gave us an illustration. The sanctuary we were in had no windows. He had me turn off all the lights, showing how dark it was in the room.
He then had me light a small tea light candle. IMMEDIATELY that tiny light dispelled ALL the vast darkness. It did not matter how dark the room was. It didn’t matter that people could not see their hands in front of their faces. The minute light entered the darkness, darkness had to flee.
Psalms 119:130 The entrance of Thy Words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. Everyone can understand it.
The illustration was about how our enemy, the devil, likes to keep us in the dark. The meaning of being “kept in the dark” is to be kept in a “a state of ignorance”. Or to “deliberately keep someone uninformed.”
If you don’t know, you can’t grow. If you don’t know then he can keep you from all the benefits Jesus died for us to have. A few benefits are like those mentioned in Psalms 103:
…who forgives all your sin;
…who heals all your diseases;
…your youth is renewed like the eagle’s;
…works righteousness and judgment for all those pressed (oppressed, cheated, done wrong) down.
The Bible says that when God’s words enter (into our Spirits, our hearts), those words give us light, understanding. The answer to EVERYTHING we need to know is in the Bible.
It may not say, “Buy this car, take that job” but I’ve learned that the more Word I put in me, the easier it is to discern God’s voice. It’s easier to access that inner knowing of what to do. The Bible also tells us in John 14:26 and John 16:13 two wonderful promises –
John 14:26 … He (the Holy Spirit) shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I (Jesus) have said to you.
John 16:13 … He (the Holy Spirit) will guide you into all truth… He will tell you about the future (things to come).
I don’t know about you, but I like knowing He will remind me of things that Jesus said (of course, that means you have to put it in there). I even know of students who use this verse for tests they studied for. I also believe we should take advantage of the fact we can know things that are to come. That’s not just for prophets. It was given to you and me.
READ YOUR BIBLE! There are all kinds of promises in there we need to be walking in!
